Relates to patterning means for, e.g., knitting-machines of the rotary needle cylinder type with double axially opposed cylinders wherein elements to be selectively acted on or influenced for patterning are so formed as to provide a patterning arrangement and a selecting arrangement such that elements can be acted on at one location to produce a desired pattern effect at any feed. The patterning elements may be needles, sinkers, web holders, reverse plating elements, thread lapping or wrapping guides, pressers &c. Fig. 1, shows in section a rotary needle-cylinder 1, intended for three feeds and having under each plain needle 3 three independent .jacks 4, which cant as described in Specifications 501,589 and 329,369, [Class 74 (ii)]. Each jack assemblage is provided with a cam such as 5, which selects or divides the jacks just in advance of the respective feeds, by action on hooked butts 8. Selected jacks are, however, pressed inwards to miss the cams 5 by other cams, not shown. Unselected jacks are engaged by the appropriate cam 5. Selection is made simultaneously by, e.g., selector plates, levers or cams 17. In a modification, in addition to vertical jacks 4', Fig. 3, there is provided an annular series 4". Two drums 23, geared together act simultaneously on the jacks through intermediate levers 21 and move the hooked butts 8 of the jacks 4<SP>11</SP> out of range of cams 41. These jacks miss cam 20 so that the companion jacks 4<SP>1</SP> and needles are not raised while the jacks 4<SP>1</SP> &c. corresponding to the selected jacks 4<SP>11</SP> are raised.
