[Class 74 (ii)] Knitting-machines of the flat or circular links and links type are provided with lap or wrap striping attachments, whereby purl stitches and plated plain stitches may be made in the same piece of fabric. The invention is described as applied to a machine with superposed cylinders. 'The purl stitches may be in solid or hollow blocks, stripes, panels, bands, broken designs, &c. and the effects may be enhanced by yarn colour changes. The invention is described as applied to a machine with two needle cylinders arranged end-to-end, double-ended needles 14, sliders such as 15 and selecting elements 34 working in 'the same tricks. For selecting the elements 34 there is provided at each feed a bank of as many spring-controlled selector cams as there are butt positions 35 on the elements 34 and a pattern control drum with cam actuating pins, screws, selector strips &c., pre-arranged, removable and interchangeable according to patterning requirements. The selected elements are pressed inwards so that their rear formations 36 engage the lower ends of corresponding sliders 15 and when elevated by cams 51 cause needles engaged with these sliders to transfer from the lower to the upper cylinder. To facilitate production of 'purl stitches a series of knocking-over bits 109. with butts 111 for operation by cams 112 .. 115 are provided in the upper cylinder. Each bit has a cranked end 116 which serves as a verge over which the rib loop may be drawn. An additional verge can be used if, e.g., broad ribbed fabric is to be knit. An automatically controlled welt cam 117, when withdrawn, opens the entrance to a welt track 118 for admission of the butts 85 of bottom sliders 15, while in the top cam box there is provided at another feed a similar welt cam 119 for controlling the admission of the butts of top sliders to a welt track 120, Split work may be made.
