[Class 74 (ii)] The dial needles 2 of a rib machine are controlled by jacks 1 located in tricks in a cylinder 3 mounted within the dial needle circle coaxially with the needle dial. The jacks 1 are selected and actuated by levers 54 engaging pattern bits 56a of a pattern drum 55. In one form, each jack 1 has patterning butts 1<b> engaged by the levers 54, an operating butt 1 <a> engaging a lowering cam 7 and a raising cam, and lateral lugs or projections 1<c> by which it can raise or lower the corresponding needle 2 while permitting the needle to have its usual sliding movement. Selected jacks are pressed inwardly so that they are not raised by the raising cam, so that only the needles corresponding to unselected jacks are raised into the plane of the dial knitting cams 5. In a second form, each jack 76 has a main operating butt 76a engaged by a raising cam 78, and butts 76b engaged by selecting means comprising cams 77 which raise the jacks sufficiently for it to be engaged by the cam 78. Selected jacks raise, by means of lateral lugs 76<c>, the corresponding needles to operative position. The pattern drum 55 is racked under control of a second pattern drum 21 rotated by a star wheel 32 and wheeloperating pins. The wheel 32 is raised or lowered into alignment with the pins by a flexible cable 41 associated with the main pattern chain or like. A movable clearing cam and welting cam are provided in the dial cam system and are controlled by the cam 21. The invention is applicable to both single and multiple feeder machines, and to machines having either rotary or stationary needle cylinder and dial, as well as to machines having latch or bearded needles.
