[Class 74 (ii)] Knitted fabrics, either flat or tubular, or knitted articles such as stockings, pullovers, or jackets are provided with pattern effects including pelerine stitches F, purl stitches ps, and wrap or embroidery thread effects G. The fabric may have, as shown, complete courses ps of purl stitches alternating with complete courses pc of plain stitches, or purl stitches and plain stitches may occur in the same course or courses. The pelerine stitches or the wrapthread effects occur in the plain stitch portions of the fabric. Jacquard purl designs may be' made. Garment lengths or the garments may be produced in string formation with separating courses or draw threads, and may have welts A and rib-knitted courses B. The fabric or articles may be made upon a superposed cylinder machine having pelerine stitch mechanism as described in Specification 540.922 and wrap striping mechanism including patterning mechanism for selectively operating the wrapthread guides as described in Specification 543,097. So that the thread-guide advancing and retracting cams do not affect the pelerine instruments. the corresponding butts of the thread-guides are longer than the butts of the pelerine instruments, and thin thread-guide cams are employed. In the place of radially disposed wrap thread-guides, axially disposed guides as described in Specification 455,801 may be used. Means are provided for shogging either the thread-guides or the pelerine instruments or both, and the pelerine instruments may be operated to collect and transfer to the adjacent needle or needles two or more sinker loops at a time. Pelerine stitch effects as shown are obtained by using instruments in pairs ; alternatively either left-handed, or right-handed instruments may be arranged singly so that a sinker loop is transferred only to one needle. The machine may have four or more feeders and patterning mechanism may be arranged at alternate feeders. Patterning mechanism as described in either Specification 282,904, [Class 74 (ii)] or 391.212 may be employed. The sinkers 36 may be formed with angular shaped front portions 36b to prevent expanded loops from sliding beneath the sinkers as the sinkers are moved forward. For removal or insertion of the pelerine instruments or wrap threadguides. a hinged door is provided in the upper surface of the instrument-carrying dial or bed.
