[Class 74 (ii).] Articles knitted in string formation are rendered easily separable by knitting at least one course from a thread 202 which can easily be withdrawn from the loops of the knitted articles. The draw-thread 202 may be composed of hard cotton yarn and of colour contrasting with the knitted articles. Alternately a course may be knitted of separate lengths of thread of such a nature, the loops of each of such lengths being knitted with a different group of loops of the knitted article. In knitting stockings, the thread 202 is preferably knitted immediately preceding the welt of the next stocking. As described, the articles are knitted upon a superposed cylinder rib machine, and the thread 202 is knitted by the needles of one cylinder only. An additional feeder 16 spaced from the main feeder or feeders, a stitch cam 14, and trapping and cutting device 18 are provided for the thread 202, and are movable into and from operative position by pattern mechanism. The thread trapping and cutting device may be as described in Specification 337,058 [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.]. One layer of a French welt may be knitted at the additional feed point by the needles of one cylinder and the other layer knitted at the main feed point by the needles of the other cylinder. A few adjacent needles may be caused to knit I X rib work immediately before the welt is formed to look the end of the drawthread.
