Abstract

929,666. Knitting. TEXTILE MACHINE WORKS. June 30, 1960 [July 6, 1959], No. 22991/60. Class 74 (2). Single needle increasing in the formation of true Argyle patterns on socks on a four-feeder machine as described in Specification 790,141 is achieved during reciprocatory knitting by providing for the. needles to be operated at each feeder, a central group of jacks having a group of butts 51 flanked on either side by a group of jacks each having a group of butts 56, 57 ranging over levels corresponding to the levels covered by the butts of the central group of jacks. In addition the central group of jacks has butts 55 all at one level beneath the other jacks of the group and the group of jacks on either side of the central group has butts 62 at a still lower level. The jacks are normally rendered operative by failure of selectors to press the butts. At the commencement of the formation of a diamond at one. feed the selector for the butts 62 is operated to render the corresponding jacks inoperative whilst the selector for the butts 55 on the central group of jacks is rendered inoperative to leave the jacks of this group free for selection by the associated selectors in turn failing to operate on the butts of the group 51. Accordingly at the commencement of the diamond the central two needles corresponding to the central two jacks of the groups 51 are operated and take and knit yarn at the feed. Subsequently in each direction of reciprocation selectors are rendered inoperative so that additional jacks are operated by their butts 52 until all of the jacks of the central group 51 and the corresponding needles are operative. During this period, although the selectors corresponding to the butts 52 are gradually rendered inoperative to permit operation of the associated jacks, the jacks with the group of butts 56, 57 on the same level as the butts of the central group are retained out of operation by the selector acting on the butts 62. To continue the needle selection beyond the central group of jacks, the same selectors as were used for selecting the jacks of the central group are used and to enable such selection to be made the selector operating on the butts 62 is now rendered inoperative whilst another selector is rendered operative to operate the butts 55 on the central group of jacks to render then inactive. Consequently the selectors when operated will now only affect the jacks of the groups 56, 57 which they do in turn to complete the diamond. Since the central group of jacks is inoperative, to ensure operation of the needles, butts 66 are provided on additional jacks 49 provided at a higher level and these butts are engaged by pivoted cams on each stroke of reciprocatory knitting to ensure that the associated needles are actuated for knitting.
