Abstract

618,058. Knitting machines. HEMPHILL CO. April 24th, 1946, No. 12388. Convention date, April 25, 1945. [Class 74(ii)] A circular, independent needle, machine adapted to knit at least three yarns in succession has means whereby each yarn is fed and drawn over the backs of the sinkers. As described, the machine comprises main and auxiliary feeders 1 and 2, ahead of which are positioned additional feeders 3 and 4 respectively. Main and auxiliary cam blocks having front and rear stitch cams are arranged to operate the needles to knit the yarn from the feeders. In operation, the needles take yarn from the feeder 4, ahead of the auxiliary feeder 2, and knit under the action of the auxiliary stitch cam 7 before taking yarn from the auxiliary feeder 2, which yarn is knit by the needles under the action of the auxiliary stitch cam 11. Similarly, at the main side the needles knit yarn from the feeder 3 under the action of the main stitch cam 15 before taking yarn from the main feeder 1 to be knitted under the action of the main stitch cam 20. Prior to the needles receiving the yarns, the sinkers are projected inwardly so that they receive the yarn over their backs at a definite height. A sinker cam ring is provided with flopper cams 29, 31 and 27, 28 at the main and auxiliary sides of the machine for projecting the sinkers inwardly and centre cams 36, 41 and cams 32, 33 for drawing the sinkers out, after the yarn has been knitted, to cause the course to be transferred from the backs to the throat of the sinkers. Reciprocatory knitting of split work may be performed by two yarns, the yarn at the auxiliary side being knitted on the backs of the sinkers and the yarn at the main side of the machine being knitted in the throats of the sinkers, and knitting of the heel and toe is completed by knitting one yarn from one of the main feeders only. During reciprocatory knitting, various cams are withdrawn and others brought into action to affect the required operations of the needles. Single feed, two feed or three feed rotary knitting may be accomplished by suitable adjustment of the knitting cams. Specifications 586,770, 592,244, 601,056, 601,163 and 613,511 are referred to.
