A straight-bar rib machine has yarn-engaging members 9 associated with the machine needles and on to which the sinker loops 16 drop in front of an abutment 13 on each member after the frame needles 6 have drawn their loops, Fig. 3. The members 9 are then advanced along the needles to ensure that the newlylaid yarn is engaged beneath the beards of the machine needles and is separated from the previous course loops 15 on these needles, Fig. 4. Thereafter the machine needle beards are pressed and these needles and the members 9 are withdrawn to draw loops of the newly laid yarn and to cast off the loops of the previous course, Fig. 6. Prior to the advancement of the machine needles for the next course, the members 9 are advanced to a position above the cast off loops so as to ensure that these loops ride under the needle shanks when the machine needles are advanced, Fig. 7. The members 9 are mounted in a bar operated from the main cam-shaft which may be shogged for quality control. The members 9 may be cranked to operate from above, below or at the side of the needles. They may also be shogged to spread the loops.
