Abstract
630,851. Knitting-machines. BLACKBURN & SONS, Ltd., G., COOPER, W. A., and START, E. Jan. 3, 1946, No. 214. [Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar machine has some of the jack sinkers 1 formed with recesses 2 which receive yarn introduced to the needles by an incoming carrier 3 to enable the sinker in conjunction with the sinker bed 10 to sever the yarn extending from the selvedge to a cleat 6 which anchors the end of the yarn when the carrier is in an inoperative position. As described in connection with the production of a stocking, recessed sinkers 1 are provided at the selvedge ends of the needle row required for the welt and at spaced intervals therebetween to correspond with the selvedges or edges of the narrower leg and high splice portions. When a yarn is introduced a recessed sinker is projected under control of pattern mechanism to receive the yarn extending between the cleat and the carrier. The sinker is then withdrawn by the normal action of the catch bar and the edge of the recess co-operates with the front edge of the sinker bed to sever the yarn. A recessed sinker is also provided at a position midway of the width of the blank to sever the last course of the toe centrally and thereby reduce the tendency of the yarn to be unravelled. Mechanism is described whereby the jacks receive an additional movement when the sinkers are to be projected or alternatively the sinker butts may vary in height and the catch-bar be so positioned and shogged as to project the relevant sinkers at the appropriate time.
