[Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar machine is provided with cutting and clamping elements mounted in the sinker head to enable the yarns to be severed close to the article being knitted. Some of the elements are sinkers suitably modified to engage and sever the yarns being knitted and others may be sinker-like members disposed outside the needle row to sever a yarn withdrawn from operation. All of the elements, except the fixed member co-operating with the movable members for clamping the yarns, are operated by the catch-bar of the machine. As described in connection with a machine for producing stockings, a sinker 28 is positioned centrally within the needle row for severing the yarn of the last course of knitting of the toe of the stocking. This sinker has a recessed cutting edge 31 for severing the yarn and is adapted to be projected by the catch-bar 3 which through cams 14, 15 on the sinker head is raised sufficiently to become disengaged from the sinker 28 on its return movement. The yarn for the next course is then laid, being engaged in the recess 31. During the following movement of the catch-bar 3, the sinker 28 is again operated in the normal manner, its retraction causing the yarn. to be severed. Similar sinkers 24 are positioned at the ends of the needle row and serve to sever yarns, for example yarns introduced for reinforcing the material, in a similar manner. Outside the needle row a pair of fixed and movable clamping members 32, 37 are provided for each yarn guide 5 ... 8. The fixed members are provided with broad heads 33 between which the movable members 37 are projected by the catch-bar 3 to clamp the yarns. At the end of each row a cutter element 40, also operated by the catch bar, is positioned and is adapted to sever all of the yarns as the guides are introduced into and withdrawn from operation. To enable the various elements to be operated at the appropriate times they are provided with butts of different heights, the raising and lowering of the catch bar by cams 14, 15 facilitating selection as desired. In addition a movable latch replacing the front edge of the catch bar is provided for engaging the movable clamping elements 32.
