Abstract

990,075. Knitting-machines, pile fabric. AMES TEXTILE CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1962 [Oct. 30,1961], No. 30386/62. Headings D1C and D1K. A circular knitting machine producing cut or uncut pile fabric from aground yarn plated with a pile yarn comprises one set of loop forming elements mounted behind the needles for measuring pile yarn into loops preparatory to its formation into knitting stitches and a second set of such elements performing a similar function for a body yarn, and cams operable to advance the loop forming elements to release the body yarn during stitch forming action of the needle. While retaining the pile yarn loops taut. The machine includes a needle cylinder 13 having needles 15 and a dial 22 provided with pairs of sliding yarn measuring elements 24, 25 each pair being disposed so as to be projectable between two adjacent needles. Each element has a hook 26, 27 respectively, the lower element being provided with a notch 35 behind its hook. While the needles are raised a pile yarn 11 is fed to the hook 26 of the advanced element 24 which is then retracted by an adjustable dial cam to measure the pile yarn between the needles. The body yarn 10 is fed to the hook 27 of element 25, which then retracts to measure the body yarn loops. The needles descend, elements 24, 25 advancing slightly to avoid any strain on the loops, the beards pressed by a shoe or disc 32. As the needles approach cast off level the elements 24, 25 are moved outwardly, the latter moving further than the former so that the pile yarn loop drops from hook 26 into notch 35. After the old stitches have been cast off the pile loops may be released from the elements 25 either by cutting by a disc 36 to form cut pile, or the elements 25 are retracted to clear the pile loops as the needles rise slightly to slacken the loops and allow them to ride up out of the notches 35. The cut parts of cut loops are removed by vacuum, blowing or brushing, and the cut or loop pile brushed under the dial 22. The machine may be of the rotating or the stationary cylinder type, and the needles may be latch needles or bearded needles as shown.
