Abstract

1393021 Knitting machines and knitted fabrics V LUCHI 11 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 22102/72 Headings D1C and D1K A knitted fabric comprises an inlaid warp thread TV which forms loops around the needle loops MI in certain wales of the fabric. As shown in Fig. 7 the fabric is formed on a cylinder and dial machine the yarn MI being knitted by the cylinder needles and the yarn LI by the dial needles. The yarn TV is fed below the latches of the cylinder needles by yarn guides (described later) which are located in spaced positions in the tricks of the machine dial. A laid in weft yarn TO is provided and this is fed below the dial needles and behind the cylinder needles. In a modification all the dial needles may be replaced by the guides and this produces a fabric in which only the yarn M is knitted, the yarn LI and TO being omitted but in which the yarn TV is wound around every needle loop in the fabric as a warp yarn. Knitting machines:-As described above the yarn guides 48, 52 which feed the yarn TV below the level of the latches of the cylinder needles 3 comprise two members which form an eyelet end through which a cylinder needle can rise, the eyelet being offset so that it is positioned over the needle. In operation the guide is pushed radially outwards before the needle rises through the eyelet. The yarn at this time passes through a hole 50 in one member and lies on a ledge 52A on the other member. When the needle has risen the guide is retracted leaving a loop of yarn around the stem of the needle below the latch which is then cast off with the loops already held on the cylinder needles. The elements 48, 50 have low wide butts as opposed to the high and narrow butts of the dial needles and consequently follow different cam tracks. The cylinder and dial of the machine are driven from a shaft 24 and a further plate 54 above the fixed cam ring 14 is driven from the dial by pinions 60, 62 on a shaft 58 the plate 54 carrying the bobbins 64 of yarn TV.
