Abstract

636,963. Knitting-machines. FORD, F. J. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 22040. Convention date, June 14, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] A circular warp machine forms a fabric comprising successive courses of warp knitted loops, ribbed weft knitted loops and plain weft knitted loops, which may enclose an unknitted roving to form a padded fabric. The machine comprises a fixed dial 34 and cylinder, the dial 34 holding in alternate series, needles 132 and warp yarn guides 128, Fig. 18. The machine is. divided into sections, each having an identical dial cap sector and three cylinder needleraising cams 136, 138, 140, Fig. 14, combined with spring-mounted lowering cams 144. The dial cap sectors advance for knitting, first the guides 128, then the dial needles 132, both being then withdrawn for a period. Yarn supply.-Warp yarns 62 are passed through guide rings 60, 66, Fig. 1, to the guides 128. The roving 88 is contained in baskets 94 carried on the needle camring 72, one per machine section, the roving being led to guides 84 to pass through the lowered cylinder needles 76 to the interior of the cylinder. Guards 114, Fig. 10, keep the roving clear of the cylinder needles and a guard 118 keeps the previous course of roving clear of the incoming course. Yarns for weft and rib knitting are taken from bobbins 104, revolving with the cam ring 72, Fig. 1, to guides 108, Fig. 10, one guide supplying yarn 106, Figs. 24, 25, to dial and cylinder needles together and the other, yarn 107, to the cylinder needles 76 only. The warp yarn guides 128 are each formed with a spring member 162, Fig. 18, which opens out when the guide is advanced, to spread the yarn, and closes against the guide as the latter is drawn into the trick. Driving mechanism.-A shaft 16, belt driven, turns the cam ring 72 through mitre gears 26. The dial cap is driven from the shaft 16 by a shaft 22 and gears 24 through a belt 20. Knitting operation.-The warp yarn 62 extending from an advanced guide 128 to the knitting around the previous course of roving 88, is taken by a needle 76 raised by the cam 140, and drawn across the entering roving to form a loop with the plain weft thread 107 extending between the needle 76 and the previous course, Fig. 22. A needle 76 raised by the cam 138 co-operates with an advanced dial needle 132 to draw a newly laid yarn 106 through the last formed loop, the old yarn 106 extending from the dial needle 132 to the old roving course being cast off. The needle 132 and guide 128 are now withdrawn and a needle 76, raised by the cam 136, receives the plain weft yarn 107 and draws it through the previously formed loop of 106 yarn in front of the roving.
