Abstract

373,253. Knitting. WELFFENS. E., 490, Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, Manchester. Feb. 17, 1931, Nos. 5077 and 10942. [Class 74 (ii).] Knitted fabric is rendered inextensible longitudinally or transversely of the stitch wales by providing warp threads 17 which are not formed into knitted stitches and which are held in position by one or more weft yarns on both sides thereof. The weft threads on one or both sides of the warp threads are formed into knitted stitches ; preferably when the weft thread 16x on one side of the warp threads is knitted the opposing weft thread 36a is unknitted. Other weft threads 16a are never knitted in. The invention is described in connection with a circular machine having radially disposed latch needles 2 and with knocking- over bits 7 of the kind described in Specification 340,825. The needles are preferably carried in a stationary bed 1 and the knitting cams 3 are mounted upon segments 5 carried upon a crown wheel 6 driven from a main shaft 12. The warp threads 17 are supplied from braked drums 18 and are guided by combs 27 .. 29 so that they pass between the needles substantially at right angles thereto. One set of weft threads 16a, 16x are supplied from bobbins 16, carried upon a ring 14 rotating with the wheel 6, and are guided by devices 46 on the outside of the warp threads. The devices 46 also serve to spread and position the warp threads. The second series of weft threads 36a pass from bobbins 36 mounted upon a second crown wheel 30 to the inside of the warp threads, and are supplied to the needles by feeding devices 44. The needles may be of three kinds having butts at different positions, and of these, one form may always knit the thread 36a, while not knitting a weft thread 16a. The other two forms alternately knit a weft thread 16a, but do not knit the thread 36a. The weft threads 16a, 16x, 36a may be passed through feelers mounted upon an arm 68, Fig. 18, controlled by a spring 69. Upon breakage of the thread the arm 68 and a pawl 24 are swung so that the pawl engages a ratchet wheel 22. Movement of the ratchet wheel 22 displaces a shaft 25 which operates a clutch 26 or other machine stopping device.
