Abstract

167,358. Knitters & Weavers, Ltd., and Codd, L. B, June 16, 1920. Warp machines.- Relates to an improved machine of the type shown in Specification 14461/11 for producing narrow bands for neckties, belts, girdles, &c. The main part of a band may be made of one and one warp fabric strengthened with cross or filling threads and terminating in fringes formed from warp chains by suspending the two-step shogging movement of the needles. By throwing out the filling yarn at intervals, a narrower fabric suitable for the neckband of the tie is made. Fabric is knitted on a small group of needles A which are fed by groups of radially movable thread guides mounted in the tricks of an upper cylinder H and operated by a cam-groove I, each group of guides containing one more guide than the number of needles fed. The needle cylinder B is shogged by means of a cam K with three working-levels which act on a pin b<2> to place an arm B<2> on a collar B<4> of the needle cylinder B in various positions. The cam K is carried on the end of a lever c mounted on the main shaft E to move up and down slightly under control of a cam d. When fringes or tassels are to be formed, the cam d allows the cam K carried by the lever c to drop to such a level that its highest step K<1> misses the pin b<2>, which is then acted on by the lowest and intermediate levels K<2>, K<3> to give a one-step movement. To obtain plain fabric in place of tasselling. the form of cam shown in Fig. 9 is used. This when depressed still acts on the rod b<2> to give a second slight shog to the cylinder B. The cam d is moved by means of a ratchet-wheel e having wide gaps e<1> at intervals corresponding to the high-level portions of the cam d, which cause tasselling to take place. When the driving-pawl f reaches a gap e<1>, it plays idly therein and the wheel e and cam d remain at rest until re-started by the pins h of a pattern chain g. The filling yarn or yarns a<1> are fed in by a curved horizontal guide a secured at one end to a radial arm a<2> on the top of a vertical spindle a<3> carried in two. half-round blocks b<3> fixed in the cylinder B on the side remote from the needles. The guide a is rocked by a cam i on the lever c, the cams i, k carrying wheels j, j<1> driven by a pinion j<2> on the shaft E. When the cam K is in the elevated position, the cam i acts on a bell-crank lever k<3>, k', k<2>, the end k<2> of which is connected by a chain i lapped round the sleeve part m of the spindle a<3>. The cam i thus shogs the guide a against the, pull of a spring n. When the cam K is depressed to make tassels, the cam i is raised and the shogging movement of the guide a ceases. The filling-yarn a<1> is laid on an outer bevel b of the cylinder and is tensioned by means of a, spring a<9> acting on a curved wire a<7> working in guides a<8> and provided with a tension eye a<5>, the yarn passing in a, zig-zag course between the eyes or hooks a<4>, a<5> and a<6>. Specification 167,052 is referred to.
