Circular machines; straight-bar machines.- Relates to means for producing, on a circular or flat knitting-machine, patterned fabric, such as by means of tuck or miss stitches or by coloured yarns &c. According to the invention, there is employed, in association with each patterning needle, a disc, wheel or other rotary member having irregular peripheral teeth &c. for actuating the needle for knitting or patterning purposes, the rotary members being rotated intermittently by means put into or out of action automatically by pattern-controlling devices. In Fig. 1 the patterning rotary discs &c. 1 are supported on a member 8 rotating with the needle cylinder 2 and are rotated intermittently by a switch cam 18 carried by the stationary housing 13 and engaging gaps 16 in the discs &c. 1. The housing 13 has a guide-ring 26 with which the gaps 16 engage after leaving the cam 18 which is operated by a slide 22 shogged by pattern mechanism. In a flat knitting machine the discs &c. 1 are operated by an inclined cam or cams moving with the yarn carrier. The discs &c. 1 are interchangeable for varying the pattern and are adapted for removal where not required. The housing 13 is preferably formed in sections for easy access to the members 1. The non-patterning needles are similarly operated by rotary members 1 having regular teeth so that the needles always clear. The needles are returned by the usual stitch cam or cams, all other cams in the cam-box being moved to inoperative positions by hand.
