Abstract
564,189. Knitting-machines; knitted fabrics. INTERWOVEN STOCKING CO. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15958. Convention'date, Feb. 19, 1942. [Class 74 (ii)] A superposed needle-cylinder machine having its needle sliders 43 selected by levers 100 movable into and out of operative position by a selector pattern drum 104, and in which separate sets of selector levers are independently controlled so that one set can be maintained inoperative while the other set can be selectively operated, as described 'in Specification 556,301, is provided with means for positioning the pattern drum 104 for starting each of successive articles and for stopping the drum at desired points to maintain the same needle selection for a number of courses. The arrangement permits the knitting of stockings having ribbed portions A, E of 1 x 1 and other rib formation and portions D with purl patterns ; a separate lever is provided for each of the rib formations and the remaining levers provide ample selecting means for the patterning. The movement of the selector pattern drum may be interrupted by providing recesses N<1>, N<2> in a disc 130 rotating with the drum 104, and provided with a spring-controlled lever 131 arranged to engage each of the recesses and having secured to it a lever 132 which serves to hold the pawl 107 for racking the drum 104 inoperative. Alternatively, or in addition, the pawl 107 may be held inoperative by a second lever 141 under control of 'a main pattern drum or pattern chain. The lever 131 is moved from the recess by a bell-crank lever 134 operated by a cam on the main pattern drum. The levers 100 are spring-pressed into engagement with the drum 104 and with the butts of the sliders 43 and are held away from the butts by the pegs 104a on the drum. Bars 109, 110 of sufficient length to engage the whole of a set of levers are provided for holding the set of levers away from the drum and in inoperative position. The bar 109 is connected by a link 112 and lever 113 to a follower 115 engaging a cam 116 on a drum 117 on the main pattern shaft. The bar 110 is controlled by a lever 118 also actuated by a cam rotating with the main pattern shaft.
