In a mulfifeed circular knitting machine pivoted selector levers 20 operate on frangible butts 16 of rocking jacks 14 for needle selection each selector lever being formed with two nose portions to read a pattern drum and a control drum. During normal operation the nose portion 19 of the levers read the butt pattern of the pattern drum 21 which is moved by a pawl 25 from the main cam shaft of the machine. The control drum however controls an arm 130 Fig. 2 (not shown) which carries a downwardly extending bent rod 131 to move the pawl out of operation and hence stop the movement of the pattern drum 21. The pattern drum 21 is driven, through the pawl 25 from link 41 forming part of a bell and crank lever which is driven from an eccentric 55 and this bell crank lever may be locked in the position corresponding to the high part of the eccentric by a lever 67 which is controlled by a Bowden cable from the main cam as shown in Fig. 6. A single lay out lever 95 is provided to move all the selectors to their machine positions but the control drum 97 is also used to move selected single levers to their machine positions. The cam drum 92 moves through one complete cycle for each stocking knitted but the control drum 97 moves through only one complete cycle for every four completed stockings. For the formation of 3 x 1 pattern of tuck stitches eight selectors read the butt pattern of the trick drum 21 and the butt pattern of one segment of the control drum may be set up to activate the eight selectors to form this pattern, and subsequent segments may be set up to vary the normal 3 x 1 pattern in spaced portions of the leg patterns or throughout the leg pattern in each of the other stockings.
