Abstract
22,284. Grieve, T. S., and Brooksby, E. Oct. 21. Circular knitting- machines.- Relates to improvements on the arrangements for knitting ribbed fashioned work described in Specification No. 18,803, A.D. 1904, and No. 12,013, A.D. 1905. In order to fashion the leg of a stocking, pairs of needles situated as indicated at a ... h, Fig. 2, are taken out of action at successive intervals, their loops being transferred to the dial or other cylinder needles to effect the gradual change from four and one to three and one fabric. The transfer cams 14, 18, Fig. 5, which deflect butts 9 of the transfer needles over the cam 16<a> in effecting the loop-transfer are put in by projections 16, 20, Figs. 2 and 10, mounted on the camcarriage and operated by a finger 41 on a ring 33 which is intermittently racked around the cylinder by the pattern-mechanism. The projection 16 is attached to a spring 15 and when pushed forward projects the cam 14 into the path of the butts 10 of the transfer needles. The first needle in mounting the cam 16<a> operates a swing cam 23 which then holds the cam 14 in the forward position when the pressure on the projection 16 is removed. The second transfer needle met by the cam 14 in again lifting the cam 23 releases the cam 14 which is then returned to the inoperative position by the spring 15. The cam 18 for removing the transfer needles to the non - knitting track acts similarly. Swing cams can be employed. The intermittent movement of the rack ring 33 is obtained by the action of the pattern chain studs 43, Fig. 7, which rotate a star-wheel 44 and an attached cam-wheel 45 the cams of which operate a lever 47 and allow a pawl-carrying lever for driving the rack ring 33 to be acted on by a cam 37. The cam-wheel 45 also operates at intervals a lever 52 which pushes in a slide 55 on the bed of the machine to a position where it can actuate a vertical slide 57 on the cam carriage and allow the slide 57 to act on a star-wheel 39 on the rack ring ; by moans of which the finger 41 is placed into or out of the path of the projections 16, 20.
