Abstract
934,504. Knitting machines &c. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Dec. 13, 1960 [Dec. 18, 1959], No. 42857/60. Class 74 (2). In the production of pile fabrics comprising a base fabric and pile loops knitted in the same operation on a circular knitting machine excessive tension in the pile loops is avoided and long loops formed by employing elements which are movable between pairs of needles to draw the loops. Pins 36 are provided in a disc 34 rotatably driven by a gear train from a pinion 18 rolling along the shanks of needles 4 and engage successively between the pairs of needles during operation. The pile yarn P is fed at a relatively high level by the eye 44 and is engaged by the latch needles 4 immediately under the hooks as the needles pass the clearing cam 8 and move down the cam slope 10. The yarn N is fed from the lower eye 42 and is knitted in conventional fashion simultaneously with the pile yarn P by the stitch cam 14. During the cam dwell portion 12 the yarn P is drawn into loops L 1 by the pins 36 over a guide element 48 which imparts a right-angle bend to the loops which are then pushed off the pins 36 by an element 58. The pile loops may be cut to release them from the pins 36 if desired and brushed or combed to form a fluffy pile by a knife 82 or brush 92, Figs. 9-12 (not shown).
