The sides 4, 6 of block 12 form latch guards for the cylinder and dial needles. Yarns from four feeder tubes 40 belonging to a stringer unit pass to grooves 16, 18 in block 12 from between which projects hook 24. In operation, at the feed associated with the latch guard, a thin yarn LY is fed in front of hook 24 to groove 18 and to the dial needles only while Terry yarn TY is fed to the dial needles and selected cylinder needles. At a subsequent feed, ground yarn is fed to all non-terry cylinder needles and all dial needles or to dial needles only. After this, the dial needles remain inactivated and the cylinder needles selected at the latch guard are selected again and the loops pressed off to form terry loops of yarn TY. Rib fabric may be knitted immediately following the terry loop fabric by selecting the cylinder and dial needles (which are suitably arranged with high and low butts) to produce a 1 x 1 or 2x2 rib and removing yarn LY from operation and trapping and severing it, following the rib border, a welt and a draw thread, further terry loop patterned fabric may be produced. On reactivating the guide carrying yarn LY, the yarn is guided by hook 24 into groove 18.
