Abstract

Articles which are knitted in succession on a superposed cylinder machine are separated from each other by severing the yarn joining them during the period when one article is being cast off the needles and when the yarn is being taken and knitted to commence the succeeding article. At the end of one article the needles are lowered without taking a yarn to cause them to cast off their loops. On the next rotary motion and prior to the last needles casting off their loops a leading group of needles is raised to an elevated position whereby the yarn is fed about their shanks. As the needle cylinder continues to rotate the last group of needles cast off their loops and the sinkers engage and draw in the yarn about the elevated leading needles. This latter action causes the yarn to break about the needle shanks but is held firm about them by the sinkers so that the subsequent needles take and knit the yarn in the normal way for the commencement of the next article. Alternatively in the case of stretch yarns a bluff member which co-operates with a sinker extending between the needles of the elevated group may have a cutting edge which actually co-operates with the sinker to cut the yarn.
