I Application filed October 22.19281 Serial No. 143,880.
This invention is concerned with means useful for cutting float or other yarns projecting from the fabrics produced by'knltting machines, and, more particularly to ma- 8 chines of the circular type ordinarily em ployed in the manufacture of hosiery and the like.
In the fabrication of knit products on machines of the kind referred to, it is customary to employ, in addition to a main or body yarn, other auxiliary yarns either for reinforcement. or plating; and when only partial reinforcementor figurative plating is practiced; the loose strands of the auxiliary yarns are floated between those sections in which they are incorporated. or interknit with the fabric. I
The main objects of my invention are to enable cutting of such float yarns incident 20. to the knitting of eachcourse of the fabric b the machine; and toprovide a very simple and reliable means for the purpose. .ThlS desiderata I attain through provision of a cutting means normally operative as a web holder but characterized bya cutting edge adapted tobe thrust inwardly to cut float yarn spanningthe interval between the corresponding pair of cooperating needles as a result of rapid movement imparted to such special web holder by a supplemental cam associated. with the web holder actuating mechanism of the machine.
In the drawings herewith, Fig. I is a broken fragment axial section through the needle dz'a circular knitting machine equipped with the yarn cutting means of my invention.
' Fig. III-is an invert plan view of the cap ring providing the cam groove for actuating.
,Fi III, IV and V, are diagrammatic detai views showing successive steps in the operation of holder; and, Fig. V1 is a diagrammatic plan view of the parts positionedas in the special yarn cutting web The needle cylinder herein designated 5 will be observed as ofis andard tubular form with longitudinal surface grooves 6 to guide vertical movementof the needles-7. These needles 7 may be of the springbeard type;
and means in the form ofpresser bits 8 are provided to actuate the needle beards'incidental to the of fabric in a. wellknown.

way. About the top of the needle cylinder 5 is secured a flange annulus 9 with radial grooves for reciprocative guidance of the usual web holders 10 aswell as the special web holder 10 (to be later on described in the intervals between adjacent knitting needles. The butts 11, of the web holders 10, 10,
engage the actuating cam groove 12 of a cap ring 13, surmounting the flange annulus 9 with capacity for independent rotation thereon; while the inner ends of said web holders .10, 10, afl'ord loop drawing ledges 14 and web engaging notches 15 which latter are overhung by retaining nibs 16. During opdetail) in eration of the machine, relative rotation as i knitting after common practice in this art.
temporary iptraction Now it will be noted that the special web (of whichthere may be several interposed in the series 10) difiers Iirom the integral projection 17 upstanding from its nib 16, the mner ver tical edge of this projection being beveled to the form of aknife best advantage in Fig. VI; For the purpose of imparting a sudden inward cutting thrust edge 18, as seen to to the auxiliary web holder 10?, I equipthe cap ring 13, at a convenient circumferential point, with a supplemental cam 19 characterized by a rather sharp and abrupt protuberanoe 20 that projects into the concentric portion of the cam groove 12., see Fig. II.
The operation of my invention will be best understood by reference to the diagrammatic illustrations of'Figs. III, V and VI. In beingacted u on by the cam groove 12 at the. regions A, B Fig'll) the special web holder 10 is retracted, as shown in Fig'l'H, to endescend and'carry the body yarn Y through the terminal loop 2 oi ice the preformed fabric Fthereby to draw a loop for a successive course, the retaining nib 16 with its cutting lugor projection 17 being" at this time well out of the we so as not to interfere with the described oop forming action. Immediately upon completion of the new fabric loop, the special web holder 10 is advanced (in concert with its fellows 10) of the 7 from time to time,
' vision of 'respon tothe.
v exceedingly medles and means-for such rapid men by the cam groove 12 to engage the fabric within its notch 15 and prevent iftin thereof while the needle 7 rises, thus per orming all the functions of an ordinary web holder 10. In cases where an auxiliary or plating yarn Y'for example-is floated, the same, instead of being drawn down by the needle 7, remains resting on the top of the nibs 16 of the web holders 10 as shown inFig. IV, and, although pressed inwardby the projection 17 special web holder 10, as the butt 11 of the latter enters the concentric portion of the cam groove 12,-is not actually cut. However, when the specialweb holder 10 is engaged by the supplemental cam 19, the motion imparted is attended bya sudden inward thrust of the cutting projection 17, which results in severance of the float yarn Y centrally of the span between the two needles 7 coo rating with said web holder as shown V and I cam 19 also acts-onthe web holders 10', it has no effect other than to cause slight dilation of the fabric loops 1 successively, and
since such action occursat alocalizedopoint, loopcompensation is allowed to take place ediately beyond the province of said cam, thereb ofise the fa ric F.
In order to enable compensation for wear the supplemental cam 19 positionally adjustable through proa radial slot 21 in the cap ring 13 for assage of the securing clamp screw 22, see igs. I and II ismade my special web ments of e auxiliary or lating yarn Y are floated; and, moreover, at m invention is simple, and 'readlly applicable to existent knitting machines without requiring any alteration whatever either in their construction or normal mode of operation.
Having thus described my invention, I
