Abstract

966,722. Knitting machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Jan. 1,1963 [Jan. 10, 1962], No. 169/63. Heading D1C. A method of preventing eyelet formation in a circular knitted fabric in a transition between areas knit with different numbers of feeds is characterized by the step of forming in each of a plurality of consecutive wales stitches each containing both a yarn M which forms stitches in both of said areas and a yarn A which forms stitches in only one of said areas (Fig. 8). The needles are arranged in three groups 94, 96, 98 two of which 94, 98 flank an intermediate group 96. During a single round of knitting the needles of one of said flanking groups takes a yarn from one of said two feed points and draws single yarn stitches while the other of the flanking groups takes yarn at both feed points and all adjacent needles of the intermediate group take yarn at one of said feed points and form bights without casting off stitches already held on these needles. The control means comprise a stitch cam 26 and means for using this cam radially which includes a bell crank 118 operated from the main cam drum Fig. 9 (not shown). The needles of the intermediate group have stepped links (Fig. 2) to effect their last mentioned action and to cause them to move to a cast off position then seize the yarn at another of said feed stations and draw off both of the seized yarns together through the stitches already held on the needles to form stitches containing both of the yarns. As the cam 26 is withdrawn, cam 64 carried by a slide 62 is moved inwardly. This effects a premature action of the sinkers 20' by engagement with the edge 90 of these sinkers, as compared with the normal inward sinker movement imparted to the normal sinkers by the cam 56, which latter movement occurs only after the yarn has been drawn over the edges 80. The movement of the sinkers 20<SP>1</SP> is permitted by the low links 92 entering the cutaway portion 60 of cam 58. The result of needles 96 not being cleared is the formation of double loops of both main and auxiliary yarns as indicated at L 1 L 2 , L 3 in Fig. 7.
