Abstract
720,167. Knitting-machines. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. April 28, 1952 [April 26, 1951], No. 9720/51. Class 74 (2). To avoid kinking of the yarn by undesirable engagement of the yarn by the holding-down sinkers associated with the inactive needles during reciprocatory knitting on a superposed cylinder machine, the sinkers are advanced inwardly in two stages. The first stage is after the active needles have received yarn and prior to last active needle being raised by the upthrow cam, the sinkers being brought to a position in which their tips are shielded by the shanks of the needles thereby causing the yarn to be fed over the top of the sinker hooks 14, Fig. 4. At or about the time the active needles are caused to rise until their hooks are slightly above the draw edges 16 of the sinkers, the sinkers are given a further inward movement constituting the second stage of their advancement, Fig. 6. This final movement completes what is normally the sinker knocking-over movement. Thereafter the active needles continue to rise in the normal manner. The sinker movement may also be effective during continuous rotary knitting.
