[Also in Group VII] On completion of knitting a toe of a stocking on a circular machine the loops on the instep needles are transferred to the needles which knit the toe and a linking device is operated to cooperate with the toe needles to draw a yarn through both the transferred instep loops and toe loops retained on the toe needles thereby completing the stocking by linking the toe. For this purpose, on completion of knitting, a semicircular transfer bar 18 containing transfer points 17 one to be associated with each instep needle, is pivotally positioned above the needle circle such that the transfer points engage the instep needles 3, Fig. 2. The loops on the instep needles are at this stage below the latches so that by raising the sinker guide-ring the sinkers 12 lifts the instep loops 6 off the needles on to the transfer points, Fig. 1. The bar 18 is then pivoted to swing over the toe needles 8, Fig. 2, and the sinkers engage the instep loops 6 on the points 17 and lift them off on to the needles 8, Fig. 4, whereafter the bar 18 is removed. A linking device comprising a needle 20 and a gripper 22, 23, Fig. 10, is then swung into position within the needle cylinder so that the needle 20 co-operates with the backs of the toe knitting needles and feeds a yarn to be taken by the gripper to ensure the linking of the toe by drawing the yarn through the loops on the toe needles as the cylinder is advanced step-bystep for the linking operation.
