Abstract

450,440. Knitting-machines. MILLER, M. C., Manville, Rhode Island, U.S.A. May 3, 1935, No. 3514/36. Convention date, May 18, 1934. Divided application. [Class 74 (ii)] In devices for forming welts on stockings in process of being knitted on a Cotton's machine, a welt wire is automatically laid in after the first few courses to take the strain off the welt hooks during continued knitting of the welt. The pattern-mechanism oscillates a rod 18 on the take-up release assembly and pulls control rods 12 so that levers 4 are tripped. A welt wire previously placed by hand on the top of these levers, then falls down inclined guideways 1 in two stages and comes to rest gently on the fabric. Since the take-up release acts only when the narrowing points are in motion and no narrowing is necessary, for welt formation, the points are racked out to their customary position beyond the needle bed and perform there a dummy narrowing motion during welt formation. Specifications 351,969 and 367,193 are referred to.
