Description

May 20, 1947,
J. GARRIC DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF STOCKINGS Filed April 6, '1945 Patented May 20, 1947 DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF STOCKINGS Jean Garric, Troyes, France, assignor to Societe Industrielle De Bonneterie, Troyes, France Application April 6, 1945, Serial No. 586,988 In France April 7, 1944 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for carrying out the improvements forming the subject matter of my previous Patent No. 2,313,294 dated March 9, 1943, relating to the manufacture of stockings on flat knitting machines with sinker bar, of the Cotton system, the general term stockings also comprising the similar articles such as half-stockings and socks.
The invention relates to the manufacture of stockings comprising the knitting of the leg and the heel in one operation on ordinary knitting machines comprising a needle bar with a fixed central section in opposition to the so-called frames with cut or gapping needle bed or with a door, or movable hinged central section whose needle bar is provided with a central movable part which can be shifted so that the needles with which it is provided can be brought out of action at the opportune moment in order to permit the knitting of the tongues of the heel.
The invention also relates to the execution, on said ordinary knitting machines having a needle bar without movable central section, according to the method described in my above mentioned application, for each of the lateral sole entrance parts (that is to say of both parts of the beginning of the sole which lie outside the instep or front part of the foot), of the unravelable edge adapted for the later connection, outside of the knitting machines or frames, of said lateral sole entrance parts with the tongues forming the heel; said method being characterized by the fact that the first course of loops 'of the sole, when finished, is rendered unravelable on said lateral parts through the transferring of one loop out of two on every other needle, consequently from its needle onto that following its neighbour, each needle carrying a 100p and every loop out of two being transferred from its needle to every other needle while the other loop is not transferred.
The device which forms the subject matter of the invention and which is principally remarkable by the simplicity with which it permits to effect the adaptation of old knitting machines to said new technics, is characterized, as a rule, by putting into action, for obtaining the unravelable course, on the lateral sole entrance parts, of the picot edge bar in combination with a knife having a width corresponding to that of the instep or front of the foot and coming to insert itself at this moment between the transferring hooks of the picot edge bar and the needles corresponding to the front of the foot, thus preventing the loops to be taken by the transferring hooks coming to lie opposite the needles of the front of the foot.
A form of execution as well as a modification will be described now and are shown diagrammatically and by way of non-limitative example in Figures 1 and 2 of the appended drawing, which are front elevational views of said form of execution and of said modification respectively.
In Figure 1, l is the needle bed of a flat knitting machine with sinker bar of the Cotton system, said bed having a fixed central section, and 2 are the needles; 3 is the picot edge bar which is provided with transferring hooks 4, there being one transferring hook for every two needles.
The picot edge bar 3 is used without any modification and, for this purpose, one uses in combination with said bar a knife 5 formed, in a known manner, of a brass or steel blade or a blade of any other material pivotably or slidably mounted in order to be able to insert itself between the transferring hooks 4 and the needles 2. Said knife is put into action at the moment of the execution of the unravelable row of the lateral sole entrance parts and its width is chosen so that it can act upon the needles comprised in the interval I corresponding to the instep or front part of the foot and thus prevent theloops to be taken in this interval (I 1 designating the width of the unravelable row of the left hand lateral sole entrance part and l the width of the unravelable row of the right hand part). The picot edge bar 3 is controlled so that the transfer which it effects in the parts I and I has an amplitude of two needles towards the right or the left.
Of course, improvements can be brought to the details without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
For instance, in a modification, the picot edge bar instead of being made integral on its whole length can be made of two equal parts 3 and 3' each of them being mounted on a different axis so that both said halves when suitably placed for the unravelable row can transfer, the one on the left and the other on the right, either from inside to'outwards, or, and preferably, from outside to inside, as indicated by the arrows, the knife 5 working in the same manner as described above in order to avoid the transfer on the instep, both lateral left hand and right hand sole entrance parts being thus perfectly symmetrical.
I claim:
1. A device for the production of the unravelable edge of the lateral sole entrance parts of the sole of stockings on flat knitting machines of the type having a sinker bar and a needle bar without a movable central section, said device comprising a. picot edge bar put into action and controlled so as to effect a transfer of an amplitude of two needles in combination with a knife having a width corresponding to that of the instep or front part of the foot and located above the instep needles.
2. A device according to claim 1, in which the pioot edge bar is made of two parts transferring in contrary directions.
JEAN GARRIC.
