During continuous rotary or reciprocatory knitting especially when large loops are being formed, as during the knitting of a welt on a circular machine, the sinkers are given an additional inward movement after the loops have been cast off and as the needles rise and latch opening occurs. The tendency for loop distortion as the yarn opens the latches of the needles is thereby reduced by the sinkers holding the loops about the needles. The sinkers are also given another inward movement after the needles have been raised by the forward stitch cam to clear their latches so as to restore the slope of any distorted stitches which may have become so distorted as they pass over the spoon of the latches. For the purpose of providing the additional sinker movements. pivoted cams 22 and 20 are positioned immediately following the casting-off cam 18 and at a position following the incline of leading clearing' cam 46 respectively. During reciprocatory knitting the two cams reverse their functions, the cam 18 being inoperative and a casting-off cam on the other side of the centre cam being operative.
