Abstract

600,947. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. July 25, 1945, No. 19053. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1944. [Class 74(ii)] A method of knitting upon a circular independent needle machine includes moving the sinkers inwardly soon and far enough for yarns to be drawn over their backs; feeding a body yarn and, above it, a plating yarn to the needles; drawing these yarns over parts of the backs of sinkers then radially motionless (which parts all have the same height) and through the needle loops of the previous course; casting off the previously formed needle loops by the sinkers acting on the sinker loops of that previous course only; and causing the newly drawn sinker loops to pass from the sinker backs, up and over the nibs to the throats. Plating yarn 6 and body yarn 7 for the leg and instep of a stocking are fed by an auxiliary yarn lever 5, and the plating yarn is positioned above the body yarn on the needles. Loops of both are drawn over the flat backs 41 of stationary sinkers 39, remain there whilst the previous course is cast off by the sinkers acting only on the sinker loops of that previous course and then, by a withdrawal of the sinkers, are caused to pass up over the tops of the sinker nibs 42 to the throats 40. A wrap yarn 27 (or a number of such yarns) is fed from a rotating wrap spindle 10, to selected needles, and is positioned on the needle or needles above the plating yarn. When a wrap yarn is fed to a group of needles it is also drawn over the sinker backs. During rotary knitting, the wrap yarns are fed over a horn 11, and during reciprocatory knitting they are fed alternately over horns 11 and 12, which are shogged circumferentially from the sinker head friction ring and are raised into operative position or lowered by the co-operation of pins which they carry with cam-ways 22 in a stationary arcuate plate 23. The sinkers are drawn out and immediately moved in again, during reciprocatory knitting, by a centre sinker cam point on the auxiliary side: the needle loops are cast off during the action of one or other of sinker cams 55, 56. At the main side of the machine, loops are drawn in the sinker throats. Two flopper cams 60, 61 are here provided for moving in the sinkers earlier than usual after they have been drawn out by the centre cam 57 so that they will hold down the fabric while the needles which knit at the main side are being raised by the main stitch cams.
