Abstract
600,921. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. Oct. 30, 1944, No. 21164. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1943. [Class 74(ii)] A fabric incorporating wrap loops (e.g. an article of knitted footwear) is made on a circular, independent needle knitting machine by a method including drawing the body yarn and (except in the case of single wall wraps) a wrap yarn over parts of the backs of radially motionless sinkers, these parts having all the same height, and through the needle loops of the previous course; casting off the previously formed needle loops by the throats of the sinkers acting only on the intervening sinker loops of that course; and causing the newly drawn sinker loops to pass from the backs to the throats of the sinkers over the tops of the nibs. A more symmetrical and betterlooking fabric is thus produced: Fig. 16 shows such a fabric. A second wrap yarn may be fed to obtain " colour within colour." Each sinker has a flat back 16, preferably slightly higher than the throat 17. The nib 18 is preferably somewhat thinner than usual, where it joins the sinker. A flopper cam 7, brought into action by a lever 10, moves the sinkers in sooner and further than would the normal cam 6: this causes the yarn to be laid, and the loops drawn and measured, over the backs 16 of the sinkers which are subsequently retracted by the centre sinker cam 14 to cause the newly drawn sinker loops to pass over the nibs 18 to the sinker throats 17. The slope 13 of cam 14 is preferably more abrupt than usual, to confine the resulting strain to comparatively few loops at a time. The wrap yarn 30 may be fed by a wrapping spindle or other suitable mechanism: it is preferably fed higher up the needles than the body yarn, to avoid its being pinched in the needle latches. Specification 3 0 0,6 0 5, [Class 74(ii)], is referred to.
