Abstract

608,377. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. Feb. 21, 1946, No. 5448. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1945. [Class 74(ii)] Screws 2, 3 and a fixed abutment 4 secure the sinker cam cap of a circular independent needle knitting-machine against shcgging during reciprocatory knitting; and cams 6, 7 at the auxiliary side of the machine advance the sinkers to receive body and plating yarns 23, 54 over their backs immediately after a centre sinker cam 5, having two sides converging substantially to a point, has retracted them, to transfer loops from their backs to their throats. On either side of the centre sinker cam 11 at the main side, are casting-off cams 12, 13: respectively above and below them are pivoted flopper cams 14, 15, operative alternately during reciprocatory knitting to hold in the sinkers and prevent the fabric being carried up as the needles move up the front or rear stitch cam 16 or 17. Each two cams 12, 14 and 13, 15 are, together, only the thickness of a normal cam. The sinkers associated with a few of the instep needles immediately preceding the last of those needles to knit before the beginning of reciprocatory knitting, have butts too short to engage upper cams 13, 14; and, therefore, during the clockwise stroke, of reciprocatory knitting, when cam 15 is inoperative, these sinkers will not be advanced, so ensuring that they shall not injure the instep yarn. A centre guard cam 40, on the auxiliary side is swingable about a horizontal pivot, to retard the point at which the needles begin to descend in either direction of knitting, e.g., when wrapping. A fixed cam 44, exposed when cam 40 is retracted to inoperative position before the knitting of heel or toe is begun, lowers the needles as cam 5 retracts the sinkers, on the first clockwise stroke, sufficiently to ensure that such sinker loops as were not transferred to the sinker throats by cam 11 on the last stroke of counter-clockwise knitting shall be at throat level when the sinkers advance again. Fig. 12 indicates the deviation from the normal of the path taken by needles receiving wrap yarn 55. Specifications 600,947 and 601,056 are referred to.
