Abstract
630,847. Knitting - machines. INTERWOVEN STOCKING CO. April 26, 1945, No. 10543. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1944. [Class 74 (ii)] The upper cylinder of a superimposed cylinder machine for producing rib fabric has a verge in two sections that can be raised independently, under control of a pattern drum, to provide room for radial projection. of bits co-operating with the lower cylinder needles to form terry loops and carried by a dial associated with the upper cylinder. By selective operation of the terry bits and the verge sections, a tubular fabric may be knitted with courses wholly of rib stitches, partly of rib stitches and partly of terry fabric or wholly of terry fabric. The invention is described in connection with the knitting of a stocking with terry loops in the heel, sole and toe. As shown in Fig. 5, terry bits 53 are slidably mounted on a dial 54 rotatably supported on a shaft 55 and rotatable with the needle cylinder 16. The bits 53 are divided into two groups corresponding with the sole and instep needles and provided respectively with long and short butts 60 for engagement with a cam 62 having a movable section 71 that can be positioned vertically, by a link 72 and a pattern drum 40, Fig. 1 (not shown), to miss all the butts, to engage long butts only or to engage all the butts according to the coursewise extent of terry loops required. When the terry bits are projected beyond the needle circle, a pile forming yarn is fed to the needles across the terry bits by a feeder 46, the body yarn being supplied at a lower level by a feeder 47 for normal loop formation by the conjoint action of the needles and sinkers as usual. When the bits 53 are inoperative, the pile and ground threads are fed to the needles and knitted with the needle loops of the threads in plated relation. On reciprocation of the needle cylinder, the normally stationary cam 62 with its movable section 71 is circumferentially adjusted, under the influence of friction plates 69 and springs 70, to an extent determined by the spacing of two arms provided at the top of the cam-supporting shaft 55 for engagement by a fixed buffer block. The verge of the upper cylinder comprises two arcuate sections 84, 85 corresponding respectively with the longbutted terry bits for the sole and with the shortbutted bits for the instep. The verge section 84 is secured to or integral with the needle cylinder 16 which is mounted for rotation on a plate 88 carried by a sleeve 90 that is movable axially on the shaft 55 by a forked lever 92 and a cam 101, Fig. 1 (not shown) on the pattern drum. The verge section 85 has spaced bars 104, Figs. 9 and 10, for engagement with keyways 105 in a flange 103 of the dial 54 and is supported by fingers 106 engaging a normally stationary ring 108, Fig. 5, secured by members 109 to a collar 110 that is movable vertically by members 114, 115 and a rock-shaft operated by a cam segment 123, Fig. 1 (not shown), on the main pattern drum or on a coaxial auxiliary drum. One or other or both of the verge sections are raised depending on the coursewise extent of terry loops required. The ends of the section 84 abut the ends of the section 85 and the flange 103 so that the latter and the dial 54 are carried around with the needle cylinder. Circumferential adjustment of the ring 108 is permitted by the ring connection between the collar 110 and the lifting member 114. Specification 567,620 is referred to.
