550,371. Knitting-machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY & CO., Ltd., BROMLEY, T. C., and SHORTLAND, A. Sept. 29, 1941, No. 12604. [Class 74 (ii)] The sinkers or web-holders of a circular machine and associated with inactive needles are moved inwards immediately after the outward movement so that yarn lying on the outside of the needles extends over the outer edges of the ribs or noses of the sinkers and is prevented from undesirable engagement with the sinker. The early timing of the sinkers is effected during both forward and reverse strokes of reciprocatory knitting. The invention is described in connection with a double-cylinder machine in which needles are rendered idle for fashioning purposes as e.g. in making heel and toe pouches. In one form, Fig. 10, an adjusted portion 6a is provided in the sinker cam ring so that the sinkers are moved inwards early as at position J so that yarn Y held by the last active needle 2 will lie over'the top edges of the sinkers 3 corresponding to the inactive needles. In a modification, Fig. 13 the sinkers corresponding to inactive needles are moved inwards by the engagement of lateral projections 23 upon the needle sliders 13, when the sliders are moved to heeling height. Alternatively, lateral projections may be provided upon the sinkers to engage sliders moved to heeling height.
