Abstract

863,032. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 25456/57. Class 74 (2). The sinkers of a cylinder and dial machine are given inward and downward movements at a point following the location of the drawing of the stitches whereby the nebs of the sinkers engage the sinker loops and urge them inwardly and downwardly away from the needles. Thus untensioned rib fabric, particularly an initial portion, is urged away from the needles in such manner that the tension imposed on the sinker loops urges the needle loops of the previous courses away from the needles, particularly the dial needles, and prevents a loading-up of loops on the needles. In producing a 1 X 1 or 2 x 2 rib fabric on the machine starting on bare needles, a rack, tuck or normal held loop welt may be produced with or without the sinkers operating with their inward and downward movements. In the case of a rack welt involving shogging of the dial, the dial is shogged during the second course when the dial needles do not take yarn. As a result the dial needle loops extend across the cylinder needle loops as is shown for a 1 x 1 rib fabric in Fig. 10 and for a 2 x 2 rib fabric in Fig. 12. Prior to the start of a 2 x 2 rib welt the dial is moved so that one needle of each pair of dial needles extends between the pair of cylinder needles. After completion of the welt and on commencement of normal rib knitting a cam 140, Fig. 5, positioned somewhat after the normal stitch drawing cams, is introduced to engage the butts 16 of the sinkers and to draw them outwardly against the action of the usual spring band 20. This action causes the upper edge of a recess 22 in the back of each sinker to move over a cam 144 whereby the sinker is tilted upwardly, as shown in Fig. 7. Upon release of the butt 16 from the cam 140, the sinker is urged inwardly by the band 20 and slides in its raised position off the cam 144. The lower edge of the usual guiding slot 28 provided in the sinker is of two levels having a forward lower level 36 and a rearward upper level 32 connected by a sloping portion 34. The level 36 is just clear of the cylinder flange when the sinker is engaged by cam 144 and as the sinker rides inwardly and downwardly off the cam 144 the portion 34 is engaged by the cylinder flange. Simultaneously the sinker neb 26, which is provided with angular ledges 27, 29, moves downwardly to clear the dial and to engage over the sinker loops. Further inward movement of the sinkers causes the level 32 to ride under the cylinder flange thereby further urging the sinker downwardly as it is moved inwardly by the band 20 to the position shown in Fig. 9. During transfer operations a cam 160 is rendered operative and engages the backs 23 of the sinkers under influence of a spring 156 and serves to assist the band 20 during these operations when the tension of the loops is increased. Specifications 701,972 and 863,033 are referred to.
