Abstract
996, 558. Knitting machines; knitted fabric. SINGER CO. April 17,1963 [April 30, 1962], No. 15069/63. Headings D1C and D1K. Stitches which are substantially equal in length and width are produced by knitting selected stitches on two or more adjacent needles. In one embodiment yarn loops formed on individual needles 12,13 are engaged by transfer bitts 30, 31, (see Fig. 2), which are then moved in the direction of the dotted arrows by mechanism not desscribed, to spread each engaged loop on to the other needle. In knitting succeeding courses the needles 12, 13 will act together to form a wale of stitches B<SP>1</SP>C<SP>1</SP> &c., (Fig. 7) twice as wide as those formed by a single needle. In a second embodiment the transfer bitts may transfer loops from needles I, H respectively to needles H, G, respectively, when wide stitches H<SP>1</SP>I<SP>1</SP> will beformed in succeeding courses. The Specification describes three ways in which the width of the wide stitches may be narrowed. In the first, at course 5 the loop on needle A is spread on to needle B, succeeding stitches then being formed on the individual needles A, B, C, &c. In the second needles I and J are raised only to tuck position in course 4, all needles knitting in subsequent courses; while in the third method the needle N is raised to the welt position only at course 4 while needle M knits, all needles knitting during subsequent courses.
