Abstract

A circular machine for producing an outwardly turned welt by holding loops of an initial course on the needles at an inactive level has sinkers provided with upper and lower ledges and which are so operated to cause the initial course to be drawn and knitted over the upper ledge and thereafter withdrawn and reinserted to cause these initial courses to be held at a low level whilst knitting continues over the upper ledge. To this end an additional movable sinker cam 49, Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided and corresponding to this cam there is also provided a movable needle cam 29, both the sinker cam 49 and needle cam 29 being spaced from the normal sinker withdrawing cam 48 and normal needle lowering cam 27 respectively. The sinker cam 49 withdraws the sinkers to a greater extent than the sinker cam 48 and the needle cam 29 lowers the needles to a greater extent than the needle cam 27. To commence the welt the first course is knitted on the alternate needles which are provided with long butts with the cam 29 inoperative, or it may be operative so that long loops are drawn, and these loops are drawn over the upper ledges of the sinkers since the cam 49 is inoperative. The second course is knitted by all of the needles and with the cam 29 inoperative and the cam 49 inoperative so that the loops are drawn over the upper sinker ledges. The third course is knitted by all the needles and with the cam 29 operative on the long butt alternate needles and simultaneously the sinker cam 49 is rendered operative to cause the initial course loops to be drawn down to the lower ledge level of the sinkers. During the next course the cam 29 again acts on the alternate long butt needles and these needles draw long loops through the previous course loops whilst the intervening needles continue to hold the previous course loops at a low level. Knitting is then continued on all needles over the upper ledge of the sinkers until it is desired to complete the welt.
