Jacquard patterning control is provided in a knitting machine whereby two selections can be made before each feeding station so that a needle may be selected to knit, miss, tuck or, in the case of a superposed cylinder machine be transferred to the other cylinder. As described in connection with a superposed cylinder machine, the jacquard patterning mechanism as illustrated in Fig. 1 is provided with the usual jack selecting levers 29 which are actuated by selectors 27 controlled from strip P of the jacquard mechanism. The strip is advanced twice prior to each feeding station by a Geneva mechanism and on the first occasion those selectors 27 which are selected are lowered by a first cam 50 to pivot the corresponding levers 29 so that they engage the upper butt 24 of two butts 24, 25 on the corresponding jacks 21. After this selection the levers and selectors are returned by a return cam 53 impinging on the levers 29. If a selector and lever are not actuated on the first movement the needle remains unselected and passes through the same system at a low level at which it retains its old loop and misses the new yarn for the next course. On the next advancement of the strip the selectors can either be selected again or not which in the first case when the same selectors as previously are selected causes the corresponding levers to engage this time beneath the lower butt 25 of the jack and so raise the jacks, sliders and their needles that the sliders are landed on a transfer cam 75 and transfer their needles to the other cylinder. On the other hand if the previously selected selectors are not selected on the second occasion the sliders which have been raised by the jacks on the first occasion, having been raised still further by their jacks engaging cam 58, pass along under cam 77 and knit under stitch cam 78. If a selection is made of a selector on the second advancement of the strip P which was not selected on the first advancement then the corresponding lever engages beneath upper butt 24 and raises its jack so that it engages a tuck cam 59 whereby the corresponding slider is advanced only sufficiently to cause its needle to take yarn without clearing and to draw a tuck loop under stitch cam 78.
