863,033. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 14766/60. Divided out of 863,032. Class 74 (2). A shog or rack welt is formed commencing on bare needles on a cylinder-and-dial machine by initially spacing the dial needles so that they alternate with the cylinder needles, irrespective of whether it is intended to knit a 1 x 1, 2 x 2 or other subsequent rib portion, for example as indicated by the letter D representing the dial needles and the letter C representing the cylinder needles in course I in Fig. 10 or 12. The initial course is then taken by all of the needles but the second course is taken by the cylinder needles only. Thereafter the dial is shogged to bring the needles into their desired rib knitting position whereupon the third course is completed as shown in Fig. 10 for a 1 x 1 rib fabric and in Fig. 12 for a 2 x 2 rib fabric. The dial shogging mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 761,972. Sinkers act on the fabric to assist the casting off of the loops and function in the manner described in Specification 863,032. Specification 196,124 also is referred to.
