Abstract

826,393. Knitting-machines. EBERL, F. March 25, 1957 [March 26, 1956], No. 9634/57. Class 74 (2). A single or parallel flat bed machine has sinkers 4 associated with the, or each, bed of the machine which are engaged by a cam 21 on the cam carriage for the, or each, bed so as to raise the sinkers and thereby increase the length of the draw by increasing the distance between the yarn-engaging surfaces 8 of the sinkers and the hooks of the needles when the latter are in their retracted position. The sinkers are slidable in a sinker bed on the forward edges of the needle bed and are each guided by their lower portion 5, which is attached to a spring to urge the sinker downwardly, and also by a rod 7 secured to the needle bed and which passes through a slot 6 in each sinker. The cam 21 engages beneath a rear projecting portion 9 of the sinkers to operate them. Each sinker has a fabricengaging hook with an offset tip 16 as described in Specification 826,894 to permit the hooks to engage the fabric as it is lowered, particularly when knitting rib fabric on a parallel bed machine. The sinker cams are either adjustable or one can be substituted for another to enable the stitch length to be varied. In a machine having forward and reverse stitch cams the sinker cam is moved to coincide with each needle cam on the forward and reverse movements of the carriage .
