Abstract

In method of improving the selvedge of a fabric including tuck loops, particularly cardigan fabrics, knitted on a parallel machine, the last tucking needle in each tuck course, viz the selvedge needle or the needle next to it, is rendered inoperative. The needles (12, 13, figs. 1, 2 not shown) are controlled by arms (15) raised into engagement with the knitting cams by pneumatic or hydraulic means operating on plungers (22), as described in Specification 1,029,871. A bar (23) slidable above the plungers to retain them in an inoperative position controls the knitting width. When the tuck cam (20) is raised, so that on the tuck courses the needle butts (16) follow tuck track (49), it pivots a cam track (36) mounted on the cam box (18). At each end of the box traverse the track engages a lever (42) pivotally mounted on the bar (23). As the lever is engaged it lowers a plate (46) against the plunger of the last tucking needle (S) to retain it in an inoperative position.
