Abstract

874,991. Knitting-machines. MONK (SUTTON IN ASHFIELD) Ltd., S. A. Oct. 12, 1959 [July 12, 1958], No. 22415/58. Class 74 (2). The welt hook bar 9 of a straight bar machine is supported at its ends by members 8 pivoted on slides 4 movable along arms 1 pivoted on a shaft 3, the slides being moved along the arms, for the hooks 10 to take loops of the first course, and withdrawn to take up the work as it is produced; and, to turn the welt, the arms 1 and slides 4 are moved and the members 8 are turned about their pivots so that the hooks 10 are substantially vertical and engage and move in co-operation with the needles for the return thereto of the loops. The slides are moved along the arms 1 by rotation of a shaft 7, to which they are connected by links 5 and arms 6. The members 8 are pivoted by rotation of a shaft 17 acting through arms 16 and links 15 having slots 14 in which engage pins 13 on arms 12 on the members. The slots 14 are long enough to allow for advance and withdrawal of the welt bar. The necessary up and down motion of the welt bar is obtained by raising and lowering the arms 1 by rotation of the shaft 3, to which the arms are connected by arms 43, links 44, bell cranks 45 and links 46. The shafts 3, 7 bear pinions through which they are rotated by racks reciprocated by cams on the main shaft. The trucks which co-operate with these cams are moved into and out of engagement therewith by forks on rods 32, 26, slid longitudinally under pattern control. The shaft 17 is turned by another cam acting through a truck, under the control of the rod 32 and link work. The in and out motions of the needle bar, necessary for the return of the loops to the needles, are produced by yet another cam acting through a truck moved into and out of engagement with it by a third slidable rod 41. The rods are slid or not according as to whether their ends miss or hit holes in a disc 56 when it is advanced towards them. The disc is rotated under pattern control. Each link 5 is of two telescoping parts connected by a spring which is extended as the shaft 7 returns to its starting position after the welt hooks are engaged with the loops; and the spring then provides the draw-off tension. The shafts 3, 7 may alternatively be turned, to raise and lower the arms 1 and to move the slides 4 longitudinally thereof, by means similar to means described in Specification 787,994. Each welt hook has a flute 19 and an offset stem forwardly thereof.
