Abstract

654,094. Knitting-machines. COTTON, Ltd., W. Feb. 21, 1948, No. 5177. [Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar machine for knitting ladderresistant fabric, as described in Specification 527,234, is provided with two needle beds 1, 5 slidably keyed together for relative movement so that the needles of one bed are in alignment behind the needles of the other, and with separate means for imparting movement to each bar in a direction of the length of the needle stems and common means for imparting movement transversely of the needle stems to both bars in unison. The rear needle bar 1 is provided with guideways 3 which receive members 4 on the needle bar 5. The base of the needle bar 1 is connected to arms 45 freely mounted on a shaft 14 and keyed to an arm 46, also freely mounted on the shaft 14, which carries a truck 48 co-operating with a cam 49 on a shaft 19. The base of the needle bar 5 is connected to arms 13 fixed to the shaft 14 to which is also fixed an arm 16 carrying a truck 17 co-operating with a cam 18 on the shaft 19. The trucks 17, 48 are operated by the cams 18, 49 to impart movement, in the direction of the length of the needle stems, to the needle bars 1, 5. The needle bar 1 has also fixed to it an arm 31 connected to a hand lever 32 which through a truck 38 and levers 35, 37 can impart a movement to the bars 1 and 5 in a direction to and from the presser. When it is desired to knit plain fabric, a second. set of cams on the shaft 19 are brought into operation to act on the trucks so that the needle bar 1 is retained in an inoperative position whilst the needle bar 5 is operated to enable its needles to knit plain fabric. Specifications 329,098, [Class 74 (ii)], 422,779, 641,433, 641,447 and 641,448 are also referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 641,433.
