Abstract

1,136,384. Knitting - machines. J. C. DOUGHTY. 13 March, 1967 [18 Dec., 1965], No. 53770/65. Heading D1C. A weft machine, which may be circular, is provided with one or more of warp knitting units so that interknitted weft and warp fabrics, or adjoining integral weft and warp fabrics may be knitted. The units may be situated at either or both ends of the weft machine bed or beds or intermediate their ends. In one embodiment each warp unit comprises a series of needles U-Z mounted in a bed, and a series of yarn guides A-G in a block 7. The needle bed is reciprocated by means of a pin 100 engaging a slot 101 in cam 1. A cam follower 6 controls lateral movement of the yarn guides via linkage 5, 18, and the guides are swung between the needles by a pivoted lever 9 controlled by a cam follower 8. The cam is swung anticlockwise and returned to the neutral position during a first stitch forming cycle, and then in the opposite direction so that the guides wrap different needles on the next course. On alternate courses warp yarn is wrapped by guide A around the end weft needle 13. The unit is movable across the beds so that borders may be knitted on fashioned blanks. In a modification for knitting warp fabric intermediate the ends of the weft fabric the warp yarn guide controls pass above the weft yarn guide track. The warp fabric may be joined at either, or both edges to, or interknitted throughout with the weft fabric. This is achieved by wrapping the weft needles adjacent the edge warp needles with warp yarn from the outer warp yarn guides, or by laying in the weft across the warp needle bed, or bath.
