968,769. Knitting machines. EMPISAL (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Oct. 8, 1962 [Oct. 6, 1961], No. 37968/62. Heading D1C. A single bed domestic knitting-machine comprises a bed 10 with fixed parallel latch needles 16 between which are mounted slidable sinkers 26, biased to their rest positions by springs 38 and projected by a cam 40 of a cam slide 14 which slides on rails 12 on bed 10 so that cam 40 engages butts 34 on the L-shaped sinkers 26. Cam 40 is adjustable, the extent of the adjustment being indicated by a pointer 64 pivoted on the camslide. In operation to commence the work weft loops at one edge of a fabric strip 70 are engaged over the needles and a metal rod 74 engages a tubular part 72 of the strip to act as a weight. The weft loops are pushed on to the needle shanks to open the latches 22 and the knitting yarn is laid across the needle hooks, the strip 70 is then pulled outwardly to close the latches 22 and operation of the cam slide then causes the sinkers 26 to cast off the fabric loops whilst the yarn loops are retained on the needles. Courses of knitting are then formed by inward movement of the loops, laying the yarn, outward movement of the loops and actuation of the cam slide to cast off.
