Abstract
1,001,591. Knitting machines. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. May 3,1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 16296/61. Heading D1C. Needle selection for patterning on a straightbar machine is achieved by mounting the needles 1 in the needle bar 2 such that they are only frictionally held and are capable of being retained in a lowered position by control elements 17 which selectively engage over the heads of the needles. When the needle bar is raised those needles engaged by their selecting elements 17 are held stationary whilst the needle bar frictionally slides up their shanks. After a yarn has been fed to the raised needles the needle bar is lowered to cause the operative needles to knit the yarn whilst a stop member 15 supports the needles which have been retained in a lowered position so that the needle bar slides down their shanks. Prior to the next course a fresh selection of the elements 17 is made. If a two colour pattern effect is required needles which are rendered inoperative in one course by being retained in a lowered position knit in the next course and vice versa. The control elements are mounted to slide in the sinker head adjacent the sinkers and are selected by a pattern drum 18 rotated and advanced to effect selection of the elements by mechanism operated by cams on the main cam shaft. The front edge of the control elements serves as the presser edge for those needles which are caused to knit. Alternatively, the needles may be caused to effect tuck work or held loops.
