At each stroke of the cam carriage of a flat machine, during widening, the nose of the trailing one of a pair of pivoted up-pickers 13, 14, carried by the cam plate, engages the first one (22<SP>11</SP>, say) of jack butts 22<SP>1</SP> corresponding to those needles which are in the lowered inoperative position; and the picker is thereby swung about its pivot 15, against the action of a spring 19, the engaged picker nose being thereby caused to traverse an inclined slot 11 or 12 in the cam plate, so landing the jack butt on the flank of a cam 8 which further advances it to a level 22 and hence the corresponding needle butt to a level 23 which will ensure its passage through the stitch-forming cam system on the next stroke of the cam carriage. By virtue of its rotation about the pivot 15, the picker nose, as it traverses the slot, recedes into it, to release the jack butt at the proper moment. The last part of this rotation, immediately before such release of the butt, is effected by engagement of a sliding latch 20 with a notch 18 in the picker which is thereby held inoperative until released. The leading picker is, at each stroke, moved temporarily to inoperative position by suitable means. When widening is not required the pickers are held inoperative by the latches 20.
