Abstract

552,790. Knitting-machines. BLACKBURN & SONS, Ltd., G., START, H. W., and START, E. Jan. 30, 1942, No. 1281. [Class 74 (ii)] Mechanism is provided for automatically moving the welt hook bar A of a straight-bar machine longitudinally a short distance immediately after the loops have been received on the welt hooks C and when the loops have been returned to the needles so as to move the welt hooks laterally from under the sinkers. The lateral movement of the welt hooks prevents damage of the sinkers or welt hooks while permitting the knocking-over bits to work in their normal position. The lateral movement of the welt hooks is effected by a slide H engaging the end of the welt hook bar A under control of a spring J. Normally the spring is held inoperative by a lever K engaging an abutment D on the slide E which serves to move the welt hook bar A into position for the welt hooks to receive or return the knitted loops. When the slide E is withdrawn and the welt bar is under control of the usual supplementary take-up mechanism, the lever K is freed from the abutment D and the spring J actuates the slide H. An adjusting screw O on the slide H engages the framing of the machine to determine the adjusted position of the welt hook bar. Levers S actuated by abutments on the needle bar are provided for restoring the welt hooks to their normal position if they are raised by the upward movement of the needles.
