A pivoted latch cam 14 of a cam lock for a flat machine is adjustable to occupy a position in which it engages the butts of the inactive needles to lower them into engagement with the stitch cams to cause them to pass through a path 17 as the lock is traversed along the needle bed. In the raised position of the cam 14 the needle butts pass above the lowering and raising cams.
