Abstract

870,260. Knitting-machines. STEINHOF, K. Oct. 18, 1957 [Oct. 25, 1956], No. 32557/57. Class 74 (2). The look of a hand-operated flat knitting machine is provided with two stitch cams 2, 3, alternating with two clearing cams 4, 5, the outside cams 2, 5 being raisable individually to inoperative position against the base plate of the lock, so that either the outside stitch cam 2 may be inactivated and the yarn laid by hand in the needle hooks after each traverse of the lock, or the outside clearing cam 5 may be inactivated and the yarn laid by a yarn guide traversing with the lock. For this purpose, the cams 2, 5 are mounted on pins 6, 7. The stitch cam 3 is also mounted on a pin 6<SP>1</SP> and, to permit variation of the stitch length, the pins 6, 61 are engaged by the forked outer ends of levers 18, 19 pivoted at 20, 21 to the lock base plate and coupled by a block 39 slidable in a slot 40 in the base plate and bearing a pin 22 which engages slots 23, 41 in the levers. The inner arm of the lever 18 is prolonged and forked to engage a pin 24 movable by a spiral cam on a disc 25 by rotation of which the levers are thus swung simultaneously and the cams 2, 3 adjusted. The sinkers may be as in Fig. 5, a cam 16 on the lock moving them so that the loops are drawn on the edges of the sinkers below the throats 15; the portion 9 of each sinker is extended forwardly, so that when the needles are fully advanced, the open latches 11 will be between the front sinker edges 12 down which the yarn will slide into the open hooks, being prevented from being caught behind the open latches. Alternatively the sinkers may be as in Fig. 6. Here, springs 30 urge the sinkers into casting-off position (dotted); and, during loop drawing, the yarn drawn against the belly 32 rocks the sinker back in the direction of the arrow 33, against a stop 34, adjustable as indicated by arrow 35, to vary the loop length. In a machine in which the yarn is laid by hand, the sinkers may be as at 13, Fig. 3, pivoting at 59 in tricks 57 in the bed 58 and raised to the dotted line position by a cam 16 on the cam plate, against the action of spring 60.
